Pastel Still Life (using a coloured background)

After discovering that I can have a coloured background to start my painting off, I decided to do another still life using the photos I took at an art class.

I like this one better.  What do you think?

    Huh?

I like the idea, the strong shadows, and the composition, but not so sure about the pink background. It does pick out some of the flower colour, which might have worked on a mat or mount at the framing stage, but a complementary colour would have worked better for me in the background, but this is a personal thing, and being a neanderthal anyway I never did look good in pink lol.

You could be right.  But this is a chance to try things I wouldn't normally.  I wonder whether it is possible at this late stage to change the colour of the paper?  Just another thought!

no need to change it, despite all the odds we still love our children when they get it wrong, well perhaps we should take the same attitude with our art, "I think therefore I am" could also transcribe to " I'm pink, and I don't give a damn"

Perhaps it's a girlie thing Dianne, but I rather like the pink borders. This has a lovely artistic effect and far removed from a photograph.

Colored background really does add dimension and focus to main subject.

Nicely done ! I like the pink myself; generally, tho, I choose a background based on the mood I wish to convey. Light or dark, warm or cool. If ht efocal point of the piece is warm, a cool background will emphasize that, etc. When in doubt, go neutrals! A warm grey or beige with cool blue flowers, warm red apples with cool blue-grey paper. As long as the piece has balance (even dynamic, energized balance) it will be successful!
