This was from a photo taken last week on holiday in France - it was growing fairly high up in the Pyrenees. I put it through Illustration and used a bit of the burn tool. I'm not quite sure if the flower stands out well enough from the background, what do you think.

I would have had the same dilemma, it is a small flower against a big background, what to do? Well I think you did just fine, the colours are glorious, the blue shadow of the flower helps to isolate it to a degree, but the colours and texture of the background are part of the beauty of this image, and the overall effect is beautiful, so even if the flower is a little lost against the background who cares? As a study in colour and texture it is a very worthwhile artwork, and well worth the climb. It has that feelgood factor.

Thank you for your comments, Toulouse, I'm glad you like it. That blue shadow was an accident coming out of the Illustration mode, sadly I didn't think it up myself!

Looks good to me, the colours are great. Can see what you mean about the flower standing out, but i had no problems with it

It is a very beautiful piece; very expressive. I think that I would have tried to make the shadow of the blue flower a bit less saturated, or a bit darker, but, that's me. Well done!

I love this Anne but I think I have to agree with pyra, my eye initially thought the shadow was another flower so perhaps the shadow could be a little darker. However I am also like art that makes me look twice so whatever way you choose I think it is a really nice work, bold and colourful, and to me the large background with the small flower gives it a sense of drama. I would happily hang this on my wall.

Thank you for all your comments. I now completely agree about the shadow, I think it needs to be a bit fainter and greyer, though still with blue tones. I do find all these comments extremely helpful, the more critical the better, otherwise one just repeats the same old mistakes.
