Re: Trouble Starting Painter essentials 4

Good to see this thread after Googling for sometime to find the solution.

I just buy the Corel Painter Essential 4 with the Bamboo tablet bundle.  I have the same problem in starting the CPE4 in my notebook using Vista.  I need to use the SHIFT key everytime.  I try it on PC using WinXP, I don't have this problem.  I don't know this SHIFT key trick until I find it mention in the Readme notes.  It is a known problem?

I try Wendy's solution to rename the HTML to HTML_TEST, but it does not solve the problem.

Hope you guys can find a solution for it.  I like the software and it is good for daughter to do her painting.  But I don't want it to run on my PC as I have to use it most of the time.

    Oakley and Koonlo

I have a few more follow-up questions for you:
What version of Vista are you using? Is it the 64-bit Version?
Are you using it on a home system or in a networked environment?
Would it be possible for you to take a screen capture (just using Print Scrn on your keyboard) of what you are seeing on your screen when you are waiting for Painter Essentials to launch and it isn't "doing" anything and attach it to a post so we can see what you are seeing?

    Thanks
    Jennifer

    Hi everyone,

I had this problem (Vista 64b), and reinstalling everything (I mean the all system) didn't do the trick for painter except when I decided to reinstall everything again, installing Painter at the end, after the antivirus program (Windows Liveonecare) en with the antivirus turned on. Strange but for me effective.

Now everything works fine. I installed later a few new programs without loosing a fine working Painter.

    Regards

    Best regards

I just wanted to throw my hat into the ring on this as well.  The screen shots that were shown here are exactly what I am experiencing on TWO different computers running Windows Vista 32bit - Home Premium version.

This is the response I got out of corel when I asked what was going on:

    Dear Mr/ Ms Miller

Thank you very much for your e-mail.

What I can suggest is to do a disc cleanup, and then lower the number of undos. Sometimes, in todays megapixels/large filesize the program freezes due to the strain on resources.

    Kind regards,

    Corel Customer Support

This totally confused me as to how they could answer with a comment like this, since I can't even OPEN the program and DO any "undos"!!

The SHIFT key option works just fine for me, but is annoying for me.  I have also installed on both of these computers, Corel PSP X2, and that program works just fine.

Sure hope they fix this soon, as I am an Essentials Newbie.

Thank you for confirming that this problem is not just happening on 64-bit. We are still working to try and understand what is causing this problem as we have yet been unable to duplicate this problem on our systems. I will post again once I have more information or need more information from you.

    Thank you for your patience...

Re: Trouble Starting Painter essentials 4

You are more than welcome.  I would like to add a couple of other things, and again, this happened on both of the computers I installed Essentials on to.

After the initial installation, Essentials started up the very first time.  Once I shut it down and reopened it is when all the trouble would start.  I tried deleteing and reinstalling, and again it would open the very first time after installtion.  But once it was shut down, it would not respond when opening again.  I went so far as to deleting Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 and Corel MediaOne Plus as well as Essentials 4.  I had purchased the updgrade to PSP, and decided to buy the other two products as well.  I then tried to put Essentials on by itself, but got the same result.  Also, there are two DIFFERENT virus programs involved here, if this is a concern of anyone.  I have McAfee on one computer and Trend Micro PC-cillin on the other.

Now, call me crazy, but if you look at that screen shot that was posted here, and you look at the window behind the Essentials splash screen, the icon in the other window looks exactly like the 'AutoPlay' icon you will find in the Control Panel of Windows Vista.  I don't know if this is a coincidence or what, but I thought perhaps that might have something to do with this.  I get the same window opening on my computer, and that is how I noticed this.

Re: Trouble Starting Painter essentials 4

I have another question for those of you experiencing the problem launching PE4. From what I understand you are able to launch the program successfully when you hold down the Shift key to re-set it Factory Defaults.

Can you please try launching it that way (ie: holding down the shift key while launching to re-set it) and once it has launched "correctly" please close the program immediately without "doing" anything in the application and see if you are able to successfully re-launch it without holding down the Shift key. Please let me know if you are able to re-launch it successfully without the Shift key, or not.

    Thank you
    Jennifer

    Hey Jennifer,

No, that has never worked.  I always have to hold down the SHIFT key

Just to post an update to this thread, I asked Jerry to send me a file from his system that the development team is looking at to see if they can figure out what is causing this problem. If anyone reading this thread is having the same problem, can you please contact me directly so I can ask you for the same file? This will help us as we try to understand what is causing this problem.

    Thanks

Nothing has been resolved about this as of yet.  I haven't heard anyhing since my last post, nor do I see any 'patches' on the Corel website.
