    The three vertically stacked sheets are the layer icon, and it does indeed change depending on which type of media you first paint with on a layer. For a longer explanation please refer to the post I made in this thread:

     So it's NOT just me! Good.

    Seems like the quickest workaround is to make sure I've chosen a brush before I create a new layer?  Weird.

    Or do like dublin ninja does. Either way, at least I have a solution.
